Goal Setting That Actually Works

A goal isn't just the outcome you want. It's also what that outcome asks of your life.

A goal is not just the outcome you want. It also includes what that outcome requires from your actual life.

Most goals don't fall apart because people don't want them enough. They fall apart because the plan didn't account for what the goal really needed.

Three kinds of goals

Outcome goals usually depend on process goals. You don't directly control the outcome; you control the behaviors that make it more likely.

Outcome goals

The result: lose a certain amount of weight, gain weight, build muscle, lift a particular load, complete an event.

Process goals

The behaviors: train consistently, complete planned workouts, improve your sleep routine, practice a skill, prepare more food at home.

Performance goals

What you can do: increase load, improve reps, improve running pace or endurance, improve movement ability.
