Progressive Overload Is More Than Adding Weight
How training demand grows over time—and why more isn't automatically better.
Progressive overload means gradually increasing the demand of your training as your body adapts to it.
People often hear that and think "add more weight every week." Load is one tool. It's far from the only one.
Ways progression can happen
- More load
- More repetitions with the same load
- Appropriate additional sets
- Improved range of motion
- Better control through the movement
- Improved technique
- A harder exercise variation
- Greater training density (more work in similar time)
- Doing the same work at a lower perceived effort
