Pain is complex. It's influenced by biological, psychological, social, contextual, and individual factors—not just what's happening in one tissue.

That's part of why movement, scaled appropriately, can be such an important part of maintaining or rebuilding function and confidence for many people.

Key ideas

Pain and damage aren't a perfect match

Pain doesn't always map neatly onto tissue damage. How much something hurts isn't always a direct readout of how injured it is.

Avoidance has costs

Completely avoiding movement can sometimes contribute to lost capacity and lost confidence.

Graded activity

Gradually, appropriately increasing activity may be useful for many people.

Scaled to you

Movement should be scaled to the person and the situation. Pain experiences differ between individuals.

What this doesn't mean

It doesn't mean movement cures pain, and it doesn't mean all pain should just be exercised through.

New, severe, or concerning symptoms—or pain after an injury—deserve attention from a qualified healthcare professional.
